Points that I am left pondering regarding the Levite and his concubine:

    1) Was this the same Levite who became priest for Micah the idol maker? There is an interesting coincidence that the Levite who lived with Micah had gone to the mountains of Ephraim from Bethlehem, and the Levite’s concubine, in today’s portion, was from Bethlehem. 19:1 and 17:7

    2) The NKJV bible says the concubine “played the harlot against him and went away from him to her father’s house”. The Israel Bible says simply that she “deserted him, leaving him for her father’s house”. When I look into the Hebrew, using the BLB, I see the parsing of the word rendered “harlot” in English can mean “to be prostitute or act as a prostitute”, “to commit adultery”, or “to be unfaithful to God”, or “to be a cult prostitute”. Hmm…. looking back at point/question #1 – was this Levite the same Levite who became the priest for an idolatrous, pagan family? Did she desert him because he forced her into becoming a temple (cult) prostitute? It doesn’t say that but I found it odd that she had chosen to leave him and go home to her father. Why would she do that if she was at fault for whoring?

    3) At first it is sort of heartwarming that this Levite would go after his concubine after four months to win her back. By the end of the story I am wondering why he bothered. His actions in Gibeah seem to reveal he didn’t care one whit about her – first he gives her to a mob of rapists and then he doesn’t even notice that she is dead? He just sidesteps around her, or steps over her, and says, “get up, we’re leaving”? It literally makes my stomach turn seeing the coldness toward her after what she experienced because of him. It makes me go back to points 1 and 2 to consider those possibilities. Regardless, she was clearly treated like a disposable piece of property.

    4) This land was dangerous to travel in at night yet the Levite still left his father-in-law’s house in the afternoon knowing full well they would not make it home by nightfall.

    5) Cutting her body into pieces and sending the pieces to each of the 12 tribes. He wasn’t just being gruesome. I see this as a way of holding all of Israel accountable and calling them to action for the horrific actions of one city in one tribe. We can see a bit more clearly the reason he did this, in 1 Samuel 11:7. It’s the same idea. “So he (Saul) took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hands of his messengers saying, ‘Whoever does not go out with Saul and Samuel to battle, so it shall be done to his oxen.’ And the fear of Yehovah fell on the people, and they came out as one man.” The Levite was saying, whoever does not come out to fight against this evil in Israel, the same will become of them (or their wives and daughters) because evil spreads. Immediately we see the whole nation of Israel responding to this very clear message by gathering before Yehovah at Mizpah.

We then see this very thing befall Jabesh Gilead when it is realized that they did not go up to Mizpah. I take this to mean that they did not go fight against Benjamin in Gibeah as well since the tribes gathered at Mizpah (20:1) where it was determined how they would handle Benjamin and where they swore they would not give Benjamin their women for wives. They also made an oath that anyone who did not go up to Mizpah would be put to death (21:5).

I find the solution for the shortage of wives to be interesting. Effective at keeping their bloodline within Israel. But very interesting indeed.

      Hi Edie,

I was also wandering about the concubine and how the Leviete reacted to her. But I also recegnised the story of Lot with the angels that Lot was aslo willing to handover his daughters to the men of the city. Maybe putting these two stories together and looking at the same themes would shine some light on the story?

but it is interesting indeed to say the least!

Judges is a tough book to read. I think it was Yoel Halevi who called it “the Dark Ages of Israel” and he’s right. I keep asking myself, “What the heck happened?” Even the judges at this point can’t keep it together.

One of the questions I ask myself is, where are the priests? I know this book is about the judges in Israel, but not one single mention of feasts so far? Not one mention of the Ark or the Tabernacle? I really do have to wonder if the priests were doing their jobs of teaching the people the Torah. Look at the Levite in chapters 17 & 18. He did absolutely everything he WASN’T supposed to do. First of all, he didn’t immediately toss out the idols, then he took the position of a priest even though – as far as I can tell – he was just a Levite and not a descendant of Aaron, and finally went so far as to help Micah worship the idols! He even followed the Danites to do the same for an entire community!

I know the phrase “there was no king in Israel” appears numerous times throughout this book, but the priests should have been the ones holding the people accountable to Yehovah’s instructions. I really do wonder if a king would have been desirable if that had been happening.

        Hi Dawn,
When I read; “in those days there was no KING in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes”….
It means that they did not put YeHoVaH as KING over their lives.

I agree there is only one time the Tabernacle is used and that is here in the the end when they fight against Benjamin.
it is very sad to see how far they have fallen.
What i noticed is that there is a distinction between the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah or Benjamin.
I also find it hard to onderstaand why YHVH SAYS THEY MAY FIGHT AGAINST Benjamin but they loose so many of their own men.
They really have to press into the Father to over come. IT’S NOT AN EASY WIN. As if the Father is showing them that HE is the one they can Count on and not their own understanding?
It looks alot like the days we are living in now…..
Everyone is doing what is right in there own eyes.

I find it sometimes very painful to see. Espeacially christian Friends.
But The only thing I can do is say how I see it but realize they find it too far fetched. We are saved and that’s it. I make it to burdensome.

Amazing how fast we are flying through these books;-)

        blessings Judith

I’ve been listening to Light of the Prophets with Jono Vandor and Yoel Halevi on Truth2U. They’re quite fun and give a different insight.

I also listened to Prophet Pearls about Devorah and was reminded of just how much effort Nehemia and Keith went to, to bring us those lessons. I wish I had a better way of thanking of them. I have listened to these teachings many times and get new understanding every time I do.

I should have put this up a couple of days ago, but if you haven’t seen the Open Door series and you’re interested in a great teaching Keith did utilizing Gideon, you can see it here: https://www.nehemiaswall.com/decision-time-keith-johnson. Of course, if you’re a Premium Content member you can see it on this website, too. Becoming a Premium Content member helps this ministry reach people around the world so they can build a biblical foundation for their faith. (I promise, I’m not a plant, just a very happy Premium Content member who is so blessed by this ministry that I want as many people as possible to be blessed, as well. It’s why I’m a Premium Content member and why I tell people about the opportunity to become one, as well.)

This teaching changed my life and I can’t recommend it enough.

Keith, thank you for being ready to fight all those years ago, and continuing that fight now. I pray that many others continue to come along side you, allowing you to continue helping those who would hear the message build a biblical foundation for their faith.

The story around the vow of Jephthah seems to stem a lot of debate.

To vow to make a sacrifice as a thanksgiving offering makes sense from the commands of Torah. However, who knows who or what might come out to greet him? As the rabbis pointed out, if an animal, it might be unclean, and therefore, unacceptable as an offering (Genesis Rabbah, Chayei Sarah 60).

    Prof. Jonathan Magonet points out

“The flexibility of the vav conjunctive linking the two statements would allow it to be read here as ‘and’, so that ‘belonging to the Lord’ meant the burnt offering mentioned immediately after. But the ‘vav’ could also be read as ‘or’, so that whatever or whoever came out would be dedicated to God, and, only should it prove appropriate, would be sacrificed. ”

I lean on the side here that Japhthah’s daughter was dedicated to Yehovah and therefore never had children. As his only child, Japhthah “sacrificed” his chances of ever having grandchildren to pass down his inheritance.

Day 97- Today we are reading chapters 10-12 of Judges/Shoftim.

  • And the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?”
    Judges 6:14 esv
This might of yours – speaks to me of two things – 1. He was looking to Yahovah and asking where the Lord was at, expecting a salvation from God. 2. And the commission from the Lord, “Do not I send you?”

      relating gold to todays prices:
8:26. If I were buying the apx 42.5 pounds of gold earrings, the check would be about $640,000 (at 80% of mkt)

      • Thanks for that reference! What an incredible amount of gold in earrings!

My husband wears earrings and now I make fun of him every time they come up, calling him an “Ishmalite.” 😉

At the risk of offending someone, please take no offence. In Chap. 4 it appears that the manly leadership has taken a dive and God rose up a woman to lead Israel. Even the “General” if you will, of the army hides behind her skirts! I’ll go if you go mentality! Really?!! Then to top it off God chose a woman, to kill the “General” of the opposing army. What a slap in the face! Makes me wonder if this turned around the fearful mentality of Israel’s army and manly leadership. Don’t get me wrong. Nothing bad about women leading it is, however, out of place and seems God raises the occasional woman up when no man can be found to do the job!

Interesting how in Chapter 1:27-36 the tribes fail to drive many of the inhabitants out. At first it states that the Canaanites would dwell in that land among them then it switches over to various tribes would dwell among the inhabitants of the land. Message here of some sorts.

That is exactly what I realized while reading the chapters. God warned them>
Deu 20:17  But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: Deu 20:18  That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.
But they did what the Lord told them not to.
They took this commandment for the foreign cities and applied it to the people of the land: Deu 20:11  And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.
We see that because they couldn’t destroy them , they put them to a tribute… And that is why the word of Lord by the Angel was: Jdg 2:3  Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
This is what is happening when we want to have to masters. This is impossible. May YHVH be our Lord forever.
