I can understand R. Gordon’s frustration with the use of verse 6:8. He might have misunderstood why this particular group of Conservative Jews used the verse, but I’ve heard it used many times to prove that we are no longer “under the Law”. I’ve been guilty of it myself.

Not too long ago, I wrote a blog post concerning what loving God and loving your neighbor looks like. I had come to the conclusion that much of Torah is simply the instructions for doing both. There’s no question about how to love God and your neighbor if you’re doing what God told us to do in His Instruction.

Nehemia quoted R. Hillel (I checked, yes it was Hillel but it’s quoted differently depending on where I looked) that the whole of Torah is essentially to keep from doing to your neighbor what you wouldn’t want done to yourself, the rest is commentary. The more we know the “commentary”, the easier it is to “do justice, love goodness, and walk humbly with [our] God”.

In other words, understood correctly Micah is telling us to learn and follow Torah so that we CAN do this,
