The Decalogue or Ten Matters
Shalom everyone,
The Ten commandments or matters is first presented in Exodus (Shmot) 20:1-14 and then repeated in Deut (Devarim): 5:6-18. I view these in a three-segment format. The first segment is how our relationship with YHVH should be . In a nutshell, with a view…
1. I am YHVH your Elohim, you shall not have any other Gods before me
(any other deity is not to be worshiped)
2. You shall not make any graven images, to worship or bow down to them
(This includes images and icons of certain faiths)
3. You shall not take the name YHVH falsely
(Don’t swear by YHVH if you have no intention to keep your vow)
4. Honor and observe the Sabbath
(We should set aside this day to devote to our lord and be with our family(ies)
The fifth I view as a transitional segment…
5. Honor your father and your mother.
(We should honor our father in heaven who is our creator… and our parents who gave
birth to us.)
The third segment is how we should live with each other…
5. you shall not murder
(Simply said)
7. you shall not commit adultery
(if you are married… be faithful to that husband/wife)
8. you shall not steal.
(Stealing is never a good thing… it’s not an honorable thing)
9. Don’t be a false witness to your fellow
(Don’t lie or gossip about another if it’s not true)
10. Don’t covet the things of your neighbor.
(Be content with what you have. )
