Red Letter Series: Episode 13
Matthew 5:10

September 11, 2016
Okay, I have to be honest and say that I had forgotten how complicated things can get when discussing a version of the Gospels that was preserved by the Jewish community. Thus begins the encounter with Matthew 5:10!

Interesting note that Keith made with verses 3 and 10. Yeshua appears to give two different “for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven” promises. This seems to strengthen the theory that verse 3 is an addition.
The first person who comes to my mind who was pursued for righteousness is Joseph (Genesis 39). However, another lesser known example is Jeremiah. In Jeremiah 20 he is persecuted by Pashhur the priest and is arrested by him for proclaiming the word of Yehovah. After Pashhur releases him Yehovah curses Pashhur telling him that he will die in Babylon. But the persecution did not stop there. In chapter 26 he is threatened with death and arrested again for prophesying the destruction of the temple. Jeremiah is ultimately spared though (26:16-24). Yet the persecution still did not end there. After Jeremiah warns King Zedekiah of the folly of resisting the Babylonian invasion (37:1-10), he is imprisoned and cast into a cistern (27:11-28:6). Ebed-melech, a Gentile Cushite, who was an eunuch in the king’s house convinced Zedekiah to rescue Jeremiah out of the cistern and succeeded (38:7-13). Jeremiah continued his message and Ebed-melech was delivered from the Babylonians (39:15-18). Jeremiah truly was one who was “pursued for righteousness.”

What goes through my mind is when Yeshua said, “And ye shall be hated of all men for my names sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” Matt 10:22, Mark 13:13. Then they shall deliver you up to be afflicted and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my names sake.” Matt 24:9 Also ” And ye shall be betrayed both by parents; and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death and ye shall be hated of all men for my names sake.” Luke 21:16, 17

Sounds exactly like what Paul was doing to those who were part of “The Way” (Acts 9:2)!

Hunted due to righteousness:
Eliyahu seemed to bother Jezbel by “cleansing the land” of the priests of the groves and the priests of Baal. He was pursued, preserved, and presented the plan of preservation to the people!
Jeramiah getting thrown in the well comes to mind as well… But i cant seem to find the verse… 😉
