Prophet Pearls #24 Vayikra
Isaiah 43:21-44:23

March 20, 2015
This week’s Prophet reading—traditionally called the Haftorah—is Isaiah 43:21–44:23. It accompanies the Torah portion Vayikra (Leviticus 1:1–5:26).
In this Haftorah the prophet castigates Israel for its idolatry and unfaithfulness, at the same time offering encouragement by assuring the people of God’s willingness to forgive their sins. This passage contains some of God’s powerful monotheistic declarations, along with marvelous promises about the redemption of His servant nation. Listen to Keith Johnson and Nehemia Gordon as they discover priceless gems in this installment of Prophet Pearls: Exploring Biblical Prophecy for Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.
If you would like to listen to Keith and Nehemia discuss the Torah portions that correlate to the Prophet portions here are the original Torah Pearls programs recorded in 2011-2012.

#24 Interpreters – should not trusted v check for yourself. I have in the past merely disagreed under my breath but was heartened when I received good advice from a minister – state what I believe, give my reasons, and your view will be respected – I have taken that advice to heart. On the another hand another minister got very upset when I raised a point from his sermon challenging his view that at heart people were good. So sometimes I’m inclined to trust advice (but not accept as authoritative) from a source that I’ve found trustworthy
This application to the Rabbis and by inference Christian ministers is challenging as a teacher of scripture to children one of the recommendations is that children should take the advice of a minister or another adult when trying to work out what the will of God is for them or even what is true.
This is also a challenge with regard to belonging to a particular denomination – as it happens the denomination I grew up in is not dogmatic on some things that other denominations are e.g. infant baptism v. dedication; sprinkling v. full immersion; however, there comes a point where the challenge relates to what God thinks is sin and this is where the pressure is now.

I just have to say how often the prayers that Nehemia prays at the end of these portions often brings me to tears as did it in this one.

Isaiah 44:3-6
3 For I will pour out water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring and My blessing on your descendants;
4 And they will spring up among the grass Like poplars by streams of water.
5 This one will say, “I am Yehovah’s”; and that one will call on the name of Jacob; and another will write on his hand, “Belonging to Yehovah,” and will name himself by Israel’s name
6 Thus says Yehovah, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, Yehovah of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God besides Me.”
Revelation 1:8
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord (Yehovah) God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Revelation 21:6
Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.”
Revelation 22:13
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

The Tree of Life in Proverbs is wisdom – chochmah. (not meaning to split hairs, certainly Torah is one place you can find wisdom, but I think somewhere it sayse that God gives wisdom liberally to all who ask. Is that from the N.T.?
I agree with the point made several times about how we should not leave it up to others to translate for us. You have to give Kudos to so many generations of Orthodox Jews who have all the people learn Hebrew for themselves. Christians ought to follow their example.

I have been so overwhelmed with blessing, this morning, thank you. Things are very hard for my wife and I:Iwon’t go into details, but, I needed to hear YHVH is in it; we are not alone. I love the view that you both have. That if I just blindly follow I will be weaker: than If I depend on GOD to place my feet on rock by connectint to Him through,” the tree of life,” I think Nehemiah used those words. Good stuff. Mike
