Prophet Pearls #21-Ki-Tisa
1 Kings 18:1-39

March 5, 2015
This week’s Prophet reading—traditionally called the Haftorah—is 1 Kings 18:1–39. It accompanies the Torah portion Ki Tisa (Exodus 30:11–34:35).
The Torah reading relates the famous incident of the golden calf. This Haftorah deals with Israel’s worship of the false deity Baal. The prophet Elijah challenges his people to decide, once and for all, who they will follow: Baal or Yehovah. Seeing God’s dramatic answer to Elijah’s prayer, the people proclaim, “Yehovah, he is God; Yehovah, he is God.” Listen to Keith Johnson and Nehemia Gordon as they discover priceless gems in this installment of Prophet Pearls: Exploring Biblical Prophecy for Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.
If you would like to listen to Keith and Nehemia discuss the Torah portions that correlate to the Prophet portions here are the original Torah Pearls programs recorded in 2011-2012.

Thank you!
This Torah Pearls is very insightful. While Jono’s and Kieth’s former religious affiliations were thought to be without Torah-precedent for anointing non-priest believers with oil (Hebrew author James 5:13-16), to which the Hebrew scholar Nehemia concurs–when being contrasted to Exodus 30:25 concerning the holy anointing oil–I understood Kieth’s correct description of starting in the “front of the Book ” [Torah] rather than “in the back of the Book” [‘Christian’ writings, NT]. Even though 1st-Temple period, Hebrew customs ‘in the middle of the Book’ [Tahnak] clearly show customary uses of non-holy anointing oils for medicinal purposes, I suppose the following arrangement of verses will only help those of us who “slow down” in knowing the veracity of those Hebrews in the 1st century C.E. that read Torah and would certainly take issue with the non-Torah-precedent notion about oil.
Proverbs 27:9 – Ointment and perfume
Ecc 7:1- precious ointment
Ecc 9:8 – let thy head lack no ointment
Isa 1:6 – mollified with ointment
(Further evidence of customary oil applications found in Hebrew writings: Luke 10:34; Mark 6:13; Matthew 26:7)
As for the related Torah Pearl in 1 Kings 18, I was intrigued by Nehemia’s mention of the Talmudic record about a certain 1st century “Sinner” of Israel when discussing the “troubler of Israel” (18:17). In exchange for vestiges of pre-torn toilet paper, and not unlike Elijah’s extra-Torah altar, maybe what Moses hoped for in his day (Numbers 11:26-29) was accomplished by that ‘great sinner’ at another time (Rev 1:5-6; 1 Peter 2:5,9). Thereby it seems perfectly precedented that holy anointing oil of a different mixture be used by, for, and among the holy priesthood mentioned therein.
I am so glad that you seek for the hidden things (Ps 119:18); may you continue to find what is therein. In love: keep reading (Hebrew James [Yakoov] 1:5,6; 2:8) and avoid other dead-fly (Ecc 10:1) comments pointed toward those who came before both of you (Hebrew doctor, Luke 7:39-50…or will you leave it to the traditions of men?).

Hey guys, KEEP READING! 1kings 18:40 Then Elijah ordered them,”Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let even one of them escape.” So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the wadi Kishon and slaughtered them there.
Wow, how does one man kill 850 men by hand? With a NATION standing behind him! I love that Israel stands boldly in DIRECT opposition to the very prophets that they had become subject to, when they witnessed the fire of YHVH! May it be in OUR day, that YHVH emboldens Israel to STAND against the prophets of Baal.
That was my new all time favorite prophet pearls! Great work guys!
