Torah Pearls - Genesis 1:1-6:8

What is the annual Torah Portion and how did it begin? What period of time is between verse one and verse two? How are we to understand that the Spirit “hovered” over the waters? What is the secret meaning behind the “aleph-tav,” pronounced “et,” and what is it’s grammatical function? If everything God created was good, then what’s with the serpent?

Shalom and thanks for the great work! I know there is a lot to say but I have a question concerning chapter 1 verse 26. « And Elohim said: Let « us » make man in « our » image, after « our » likeness ».. Why in the plural form? I’m asking humbly cause I don’t want to fall in some « traditional Christian » answers or presumption that sometimes we can hear..

Yehovah created the heavens and the earth. Many heavens, I wonder how many? One earth; I have always wondered why only one, then I think about what the humans have done to this earth and how Yehovah regretted making humans stated later in Genesis 6:6. This always makes me weep, every time I read it. So when I read about Heavens and earth, I remember Revelation 21:1 which says: And I saw a renewed heaven and a renewed earth, for the former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea is no more. So the heavens will be reduced to one heaven? Can I assume that Yehovah is also passing judgment on Heaven as He will on humans on Judgement Day? Is there scripture to back that up? Nothing comes to mind. I’m just thinking out loud.
It does make me wonder about the darkness that existed before the Light came to be. I am thankful and grateful for the Light! For I am the Light according to Matthew 5:16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. And with that said, another question comes to mind. If Yehovah is in heaven, where was Yehovah before he created heaven? I have always wondered how Yehovah came to be. I understand that Yehovah states in Isaiah 46:6 “Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me. BUT in Genesis 1:26 it says, And Yehovah said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness… So I will be asking in a later Torah Pearls: Who is Us in Our image, according to Our likeness? I am very interested in what the Hebrew actually says.
I did notice that you skipped verse 7 which is quite fascinating. And Yehovah made the expanse, and separated the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse. And it came to be so.
I can only imagine the sheer force of everything that He was doing during creation was so violent yet it produced a paradise. Just WOW!
I really enjoyed hearing the interaction between Jonah, Nehemia and Keith. You really made a good analogy about ex-smokers and ex-Christians (ex-church goers). I agree that we need to still continue to reach out but I also believe that when you are rejected that you should shake off the dust off your shoes and move on. I see it as planting the seed. While today they rejected the truth from you, tomorrow they will hear another seed from somewhere else and put two and two together and then their heart may be more prepared to accept the truth and come into the light. It is a process and everyone has a different road in which they travel uniquely in this life.

Great Torah Pearl!. I too thought we would be going line by line through the readings. but it is nice to get the big picture rather than line by line details.
I have been doing Tom Bradford’s Torah studies at http://www.torahclass.com, and he DOES go Line by line to capture the intricate details that for the big picture.
Great start to the New year!

What a blessing to hear timeless truths, penetrating questions and even some answers about the beginning! Let’s ask ourselves where am I?, what time is it? and who am I?
Notice that the Who am I? is not even asked until after the Where am I? and What time is it? Time – what a mystery! Let’s go back to this discussion often, as a reminder of Where we are, which is on His creation (feet firmly planted) and What time it is – which is in His own time (in these days).
Thank you, gentlemen, for your wisdom – your candor and good humor!
