IMPORTANT UPDATE:
We thought we had the answer to the two questions that kept popping up as we studied both the Big Book (the Old Testament) and the Little Book (the New Testament). How can we have a loving relationship with the Creator if we fear, or are afraid, of Him? How can He love us when He has laid out all kinds of laws for us to follow that we know we will violate, leading us to worry about when we get the “Go straight to Jail” card, like in the Monopoly game? In short, what do the words in our English Bible really mean when we read “fear” and “law”?
To get the answer, we had interviewed a Jewish Rabbi – Rabbi Eliezer Ben-Yehuda – who was born in Israel, lives in the United States and has a street in Jerusalem named after his Grandfather. But the religious police were starting to squawk when he told us those two words were mistranslated from the original Hebrew. After all, his grandfather was the one who brought Hebrew back to life as a language. His Father even worked on completing the Hebrew-English dictionary that his Grandfather started but did not get to complete before his death.
To calm the critics who were complaining, “But he’s a Jew, not a Christian,” we knew we had to revisit these two words with another expert. We decided to go to Israel to interview a Christian born in China to Norwegian parents about the English Bible’s words “fear” and “law”.
The Christian living in Israel but born in China to Norwegian missionary parents agreed with the Jew living in the United States but born in Israel whose grandfather revived the Hebrew language and made it a living language today. Anyone who thinks God does not care about the entire world should go back and read this paragraph a few more times!
We boarded a plane to fly to Israel just as the Coronavirus was beginning to explode around the world – March 2020. The big question in our minds was not “fear” or “law” but “Would we make it home safely”!
